Sir
Greetings from PVCHR.

The report refers to police firing on 3rd June, 2011, at a group of people who were protesting the blocking of a road because of an upcoming factory in Bhajanpur village of Araria district. Five people, including a pregnant woman and a six-month-old baby, were killed while nine others were injured.

All India Milli Council general secretary M. Manzoor Alam said: "Police did not open fire to disperse the crowd but the victims were intentionally shot. If the police wanted the mob to disperse, they would have taken aim below knee. Everybody was shot point blank in the head or chest."

On behalf of PVCHR, I request NHRC to look into the incidence of police firing and initiate necessary action against the culprit. I also request you to direct the state government to provide compensation to the people who are killed and injured. Efforts should be undertaken by the state to instill a sense of security among the villagers who are predominantly muslim minority.

With regards,

Dr. Mohanlal Panda
