Mob justice: Hired killer burnt alive before cops

GURGAON: A partisan feud took a violent turn in Hayatpur village on Thursday afternoon as the village sarpanch was shot at and fatally wounded, and angry villagers later burnt alive one of the hired killers. Sources said the mob justice was meted out in the presence of policemen.
Witnesses said village headman Rakesh was fired upon by three gunmen and succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. The attack took place around 2pm when Rakesh was playing cards with his friends. "The three unidentified youths came on a bike and fired indiscriminately. While Rakesh was grievously injured, another villager, Dharambeer, was also hurt," said a villager who did not wish to be named.
As the gunmen tried to flee, the villagers managed to catch one of them. By then, witnesses said, the police had already arrived in response to a distress call. When the villagers learnt that the sarpanch had succumbed to his injuries they beat up the captured assassin and then, unmindful of the police, doused him and his bike in kerosene and set both on fire.
"When one of the policemen went to rescue the accused, people started pelting stones at us," said a senior Gurgaon police officer who was present at the spot. In response, the police clamed, they rained truncheon blows on the villagers and took some of them into custody. Four policemen and two mediapersons were reported injured.
In the evening, joint commissioner of Gurgaon police Alok Mittal said sarpanch Rakesh was shot dead by three men hired by another Rakesh from the same village who had a grudge against the headman.
"The clash was between two groups of the same village but the assassins were from outside. We have formed 10 teams to catch the main accused Rakesh and the two other gunmen who managed to flee," said Mittal. The police have also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for the person who helps them catch the main accused.
The sarpanch earlier had a narrow escape on June 3 when he was shot at in broad daylight in the presence of policemen. He was allegedly attacked by his rival Rakesh as he had opposed the digging of an illegal tube well in the village.
