Orissa: Dalit MLA faces discrimination

CNN-IBN

A Dalit MLA was allegedly discriminated against because of caste identity in Orissa. The MLA Kashinath Mallik has alleged that he was not allowed to eat food along with others at an official meeting.

He said that he was segregated and served in a separate room.

"What happened was wrong. The other MLAs were seated and served lunch in the refreshment room. We were sitting in the other room and were served food on a plate made of leaves," he said.

He added, "They must apologise to restore my dignity.

The incident took place after a District Rural Development Authority meeting in Bhubaneswar on July 20.

Mallik, a BJD MLA from Daspall has now written to the Orissa Assembly Speaker seeking his intervention in the matter.

Sir this kind of discrimination is a serious case of human rights violation. On behalf of PVCHR, I request you to look into the matter and act against people who are perpetrating this kind of discrimination.

With regards,
