Neglect and torture at 'abode of love' [Mumbai]

AURANGABAD: Mamta, a shelter home in Aurangabad for mentally challenged boys, is supposed to be the very epitome of love and care, but callous and brutal treatment is all that these poor children are meted out.
The severely malnourished boys are covered with gaping wounds, burns, scabies and open pustules. Two children have died in the past one month of diseases that are easily curable and many more seem to be waiting in queue.
The boys were shifted out of the institution late on Monday night, but a few hours before that, TOI sneaked into the Mamta Matimand Balgruha on Aurangabad's Jatwada Road to be greeted to a scene of utter neglect and torture. Starved and emaciated, the children looked at our reporter hopefully, begging for biscuits. One of boys was so hungry that he did not even protest against the raw wheat grain given to him, though the financial records of the institution show "money spent on mutton and eggs". Many of the inmates landed up here after policemen picked them up from the streets of Mumbai and sent them to the Dongri remand home. The officials there parcelled them off to the Aurangabad home. Ironically, most children living on the streets look far healthier than these boys at Mamta.
When TOI contacted Asha Bajpai, chairperson of the Bombay high court-appointed committee inspecting the condition of shelter homes, corroborated our reporter's findings. The panel has just paid a visit to the home and shocked by the condition in which the children have been left to rot, literally, the members have called for strict action against those running the institution as well as government officials who had granted it a licence and inspected it. The panel has also called for immediate medical attention and proper nutrition for the boys.
Sir, this is a case of serious human rights violation. On behalf of PVCHR, I request you to look into the matter and take immediate action.
